Government Wide: Systems of Support

VICTORIA – The Province has proclaimed the first full week of June every year as B.C. Seniors’ Week and this year, Seniors’ Week runs from June 7 through June 13. This is an opportunity for communities to acknowledge and celebrate the diversity of the province’s older population and to increase public awareness of their vital role in British Columbia.
VANCOUVER – Low-income urban singles and families will have greater access to affordable housing with the official opening of a 23-unit development on Jackson Avenue and Cordova Street thanks to help from residents and funding from the Government of Canada, Province of B.C. and City of Vancouver.
MASSET – Seniors and adults with disabilities in Masset now have access to four new affordable homes with the opening of the Nick Grosse assisted living development.
BURNABY – Women and children leaving transition homes will have access to nine new units of second stage housing once construction is complete thanks to $3.88 million in funding from federal, provincial, municipal and community partners to the Marguerite Dixon Transition Society.
PARKSVILLE – Nanaimo-Parksville MLA Ron Cantelon, on behalf of Children and Family Development Minister Tom Christensen, announced an investment of $5.8 million today for the creation of a new Parksville community hub.
SURREY – The Province is providing $32.9 million for two new supportive housing developments, creating 211 jobs in Surrey, Minister of Housing and Social Development Rich Coleman announced.
VICTORIA – The Province is providing just over $2 million in grants from the Housing Endowment Fund (HEF) to 12 innovative housing projects that help meet the diverse housing needs of British Columbians, Minister of Housing and Social Development Rich Coleman announced.
SAANICH – The Province has sold land worth $306,000 to the Habitat for Humanity Victoria at a cost of $10 and will provide additional funding for affordable housing units at two locations, enabling more families to purchase housing, announced Housing and Social Development Minister Rich Coleman.
VANCOUVER – To improve services for adults with developmental disabilities and their families, the Province has increased Community Living BC’s 2009/10 budget by $52 million, announced Rich Coleman, Minister of Housing and Social Development.
DUNCAN – A community-based crime prevention pilot program designed to support at-risk and vulnerable youth in Duncan and the Cowichan Valley will be launched next week, announced Children and Family Development Minister Tom Christensen.
