VANCOUVER – Five B.C. First Nations artists were named as the recipients of the 2009 BC Creative Achievement Awards for Aboriginal Art today by Premier Gordon Campbell and Keith Mitchell, chair of the British Columbia Achievement Foundation.
VANCOUVER – Premier Gordon Campbell made the following statement regarding the decision by Phil Fontaine to retire as the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations:
VICTORIA – The Province of British Columbia has granted $390,000 to the latest round of the Aboriginal Arts Development Awards, a significant increase over last year’s amount, Tourism, Culture and the Arts Minister Bill Bennett announced.
VICTORIA – Aboriginal youth are celebrated in the release of a DVD that features the successes of young, local Aboriginal athletes, announced Minister of Healthy Living and Sport Mary Polak.
FORT ST. JOHN – The Province is providing $65,000 in funding for the Fort St. John Friendship Society to run the Aboriginal Homeless Outreach Program in Fort St. John, announced Housing and Social Development Minister Rich Coleman.
PORT ALBERNI — The Province has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with each of the five Maa-nulth First Nations that transfers ownership over key parcels of treaty settlement lands in advance of implementing their treaty, announced Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Michael de Jong.
KAMLOOPS – Aboriginal students, singles and families will have access to 19 new units of affordable housing at a $6.2-million development that officially broke ground today with the help of provincial and community partners, announced Claude Richmond, MLA for Kamloops.
KAMLOOPS – The Province and Stk’emlupsemc of the Secwepemc Nation (SSN) have signed a Mining and Minerals Agreement that will help to develop capacity to participate in, and benefit from, mining activities in its territory in the future, Minister of State for Mining Gordon Hogg announced.
QUEEN CHARLOTTE – The Province is providing $590,000 to the Council of the Haida Nation to support implementation of a Strategic Land-Use Agreement, Forests and Range Minister Pat Bell announced on behalf of Agriculture and Lands Minister Ron Cantelon.
PORT CLEMENTS – Four forest workers will improve the local landfill thanks to $22,700 from the Community Development Trust’s Job Opportunities Program, Forests and Range Minister Pat Bell and Community Development Minister Kevin Krueger announced.
