Ecosystem restoration burns set for Mackenzie area | |
MACKENZIE – The BC Wildfire Service will be conducting a series of ecosystem restoration burns in the West Parsnip area of the Mackenzie Natural Resource District from June 7 to June 30, 2017, if weather and site conditions are favourable. These controlled burns will occur at about the 52.3-kilometre mark on the West Parsnip Forest Service Road (about 60 kilometres northwest of Mackenzie) and will cover about 40 hectares. The burns will be conducted by BC Wildfire Service personnel and other ministry staff, who will carefully monitor the fires at all times. The introduction of managed fire to these areas will help restore ecosystems and maintain plant communities that are native to the area. These managed fires will also reduce accumulations of forests fuels and decrease the risk of devastating wildfires in this area in future. All prescribed burns must comply with the Environmental Management Act and the open burning smoke control regulation. This helps minimize the amount of smoke generated. To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.
