PROVINCE APPOINTS BILL SMITH TO BOARD OF BRITISH COLUMBIA RAILWAY CORPORATION

VICTORIA -- The provincial government has appointed Bill Smith of Prince Rupert to the board of the British Columbia Railway Corporation for a term expiring March 6, 1999, Employment and Investment Minister Dan Miller announced today.

"Bill Smith brings a broad range of experience having worked both in the private and public sectors," said Miller. "At the same time, Mr. Smith's extensive knowledge of issues facing northern communities will be a valuable asset to the board of BC Rail. I am confident he, together with the remaining board members, will continue to provide the strategic leadership vital to the strengthening performance we have seen from BC Rail over the past number of years."

Smith has served as City Administrator in Prince Rupert for a number of years.

The other recently appointed members of the board of BC Rail are: Philip Asp, John Goldsmith, Jean Leahy, Harold Halvorson, Paul McElligott, M. Anne Pool; Edmond Price and Diane Wood.

BCR Group of Companies provides integrated services in transportation, telecommunications, real estate and related services. The group is comprised of a holding company, four operating subsidiaries and a joint-venture investment management company.

The holding company is British Columbia Railway Company, the joint-venture management company is BCR Ventures Inc. and the four operating subsidiaries are: BC Rail Ltd., BCR Properties Ltd., Vancouver Wharves Ltd. and Westel Telecommunications Ltd. The holding company is a commercial Crown corporation, wholly-owned by the province of British Columbia.
