VICTORIA - Pender Harbour residents will vote Nov. 20 on incorporation of a new municipality, Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Gordon Wilson announced today on behalf of Municipal Affairs Minister Jim Doyle.

Residents will decide whether to create a new municipality that would include the Pender Harbour fire protection district as far south as Bryan Road plus District Lot 3974. As requested by the Pender Harbour restructure committee, the Middle Point area is excluded from the proposed municipality. The incorporation vote will require a majority of 50 per cent plus one to pass.

"People in the Pender Harbour area have been working toward this vote for well over a year," said Wilson. "The studies and consultations are complete, and a vote can go ahead at the time of regular local government elections this November."

The Pender Harbour restructure committee, with broad community representation, has led the process towards an incorporation vote, which has included public consultation and a consultant's study into the implications of restructuring the local government.

"This is good news for Pender Harbour," said Wilson. "Local residents will get to decide whether incorporation of Pender Harbour should take place, and they will have the facts they need to make an informed decision."

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs provided an earlier planning grant to help fund the restructure study. The grant included funds for informational materials that will be distributed to electors in advance of a final public meeting before the Nov. 20 vote.
