ADULT EDUCATORS REACH AGREEMENT

VICTORIA – A three-year agreement has been reached for adult education staff with the Vancouver School District, Finance Minister Carole Taylor announced today.

“I want to thank the negotiators for their commitment to reaching an agreement that is both fair and affordable,” said Taylor. “The agreement was reached more than a year before the contract was set to expire, which promotes stability in an important area of our education sector.”

The Vancouver Teachers' Federation represents some 263 adult educators employed with the Vancouver School District 39. Their contract was set to expire on June 30, 2008, but the parties decided to begin bargaining early. The new agreement will expire June 30, 2011.

“We recognize the tremendous importance of lifelong learning and the pivotal role adult educators play,” said Education Minister Shirley Bond. “I commend the negotiators from both sides who worked very hard to reach this three-year agreement.”

The Vancouver Teachers’ Federation members will vote on ratification over the next few weeks.

“It is important to remember that although most public sector agreements were successfully completed last year, negotiators are still hard at work at the bargaining table today,” said Taylor. “There are several agreements remaining before the negotiating framework concludes and I know all parties are committed to reaching fair and affordable contracts.”

To date, 142 agreements have been reached under the Province’s negotiating framework. Twenty-eight contracts that have yet to expire, covering approximately 14,575 employees, must still be negotiated.
