VICTORIA – Twenty agreements have been reached for faculty at British Columbia’s colleges, Finance Minister Carole Taylor announced today.
“I want to thank the negotiators
on both sides for working hard to achieve these agreements,” said
Taylor. “Reaching these settlements required discussions of workplace issues at
a local level. The flexibility of the negotiating framework allowed parties to
accomplish agreements that meet the broad needs of the sector, as well as the
unique needs of individual colleges.”
All 20 agreements are three years in length and cover more than 10,000 faculty staff represented by the BC Government and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU) and the Federation of Post Secondary Educators (FPSE) union.
“Colleges are an integral part of B.C.’s exceptional post-secondary education system that is training students today to help meet the growing demand for workers in our province,” said Advanced Education Minister Murray Coell. “These agreements recognize the professional instruction provided by college faculty across B.C. is essential to giving students a quality post-secondary education.”
BCGEU and FPSE members will vote on ratification over the next few weeks.
“It is important to remember that although most public sector agreements were successfully completed last year, negotiators are still hard at work at the bargaining table today,” said Taylor. “There are several agreements remaining before the negotiating framework concludes and I know all parties are committed to reaching fair and affordable contracts.”
To date, 162 agreements have been reached under the Province’s negotiating framework. Eight contracts that have yet to expire, covering approximately 6,981 employees, must still be negotiated.
