$1.5-BILLION SEISMIC MITIGATION PROGRAM

VICTORIA – The following are the facts on the Province’s seismic upgrade program for B.C. schools:

  • In 2005, government announced a 15-year, $1.5-billion program to seismically upgrade B.C. schools and remains committed to that program.

  • To date, 25 school seismic upgrades have been completed, 27 more are under construction and another 22 schools have received approval to proceed to construction.

  • From 2001 to 2007, more than $397 million was invested in seismic upgrading of schools in 37 school districts in B.C.

  • Every year, the Province also provides a total of $5 million to districts in seismic-designated zones to complete “non-structural” seismic work. This includes work such as attaching cabinets to walls, covering some windows with protective film and securing lights.

  • Seismic safety is also a key component of government’s revitalization of school infrastructure. Each of the 67 new schools built since 2001 are modern, safe seismically-sound buildings.
