PROVINCE CONGRATULATES B.C. CURLING TEAM

VICTORIA – On behalf of the Province of B.C., Healthy Living and Sport Minister Mary Polak congratulated Vancouver’s Marla Mallett and her B.C. team on their silver medal win at the 2009 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

“These five women have made B.C. proud,” said Polak. “Marla Mallett and her rink are examples of the incredible curling talent we will have to choose from for the 2010 Games.”

Team B.C. was made up of skip Marla Mallett, vice Grace MacInnes, second Diane Gushulak, lead Jacalyn Brown, 5th Adina Tasaka and coach Ken MacDonald. They led the round robin with an 8-3 record before falling to the defending champions, Team Canada, 8-5 in the final.

“Victoria has once again proven that it has the expertise, the volunteer base and the spirit and enthusiasm to host major sporting events,” said Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA Ida Chong. “Congratulations to the event organizers and everyone who contributed to this successful event.”

The 2009 Scotties Tournament was held at Victoria’s Save-On Foods Memorial Arena, which also hosted the Men’s World Curling Championship in 2005. In total, over 70,000 people attended the nine-day tournament.

“This was some of the most exciting curling our province has ever seen,” said Saanich North and the Islands MLA Murray Coell. “With such an impressive showing against the defending champions, I know the experience the B.C. rink gained in Victoria will be invaluable as they move forward to qualify for the 2010 Olympic Games here in B.C. in less than a year.”

Mallett’s team will now move on to the Road to the Roar tournament in Prince George in November as they work to qualify to represent Canada at the 2010 Winter Games.
