VICTORIA – On behalf of the Province of B.C., Healthy Living and Sport Minister Mary Polak congratulated Team Canada on its gold medal win at the 2009 World Wheelchair Curling Championship, held Feb. 21-28 at the Vancouver Olympic/Paralympic Centre.
“With their dominating gold medal
win over Sweden, Canada’s wheelchair curling team has cemented its place as a
favourite for the 2010 Paralympic Games,” said Polak. “After seeing such a high
level of competition this past week, I am excited that we’ll be able to cheer
on these same curlers when they return home to B.C. to go for gold in 2010.”
Winnipeg’s Chris Sobkowicz (lead)
joined British Columbians Jim Armstrong (Richmond, skip), Ina Forrest
(Armstrong, second), Darryl Neighbour (Vancouver, third), Sonja Gaudet (Vernon,
alternate) and Joe Rea (Prince George, coach) to defeat Sweden 9-2 in the final
to win the gold medal. As the host country,
“We have a spectacular depth of talent in this province and in this country,” said Polak. “Thank you to all the organizers, volunteers and athletes who once again proved why British Columbia has an international reputation for excellence in sport hosting.”
The Vancouver Olympic/Paralympic Centre is a 2010 Winter Games venue that is already available for recreational use. Following the Games, the curling venue will become a multi-purpose community recreation centre that will include an ice hockey rink, gymnasium, library and an eight sheet curling club.
