ROAD TO 2010 TOUR BRINGS OLYMPIC SPIRIT TO COMMUNITIES

VICTORIA – British Columbians in communities across the province will have the chance to experience firsthand the spirit of the 2010 Winter Games when the Road to 2010 Community Tour visits their region, announced Healthy Living and Sport Minister Mary Polak.

“There is now officially one year left until the opening of the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games and only 337 days until the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. In that time, the Road to 2010 Community Tour will be travelling across British Columbia to give people in every part of the province a chance to experience and embrace the spirit of the Games,” said Polak. “By encouraging all British Columbians to get excited about the Games and to lead healthier lifestyles, the tour will also promote the Province’s goal of becoming the healthiest region to ever host an Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

As part of the Road to 2010 Community Tour, British Columbians will have the chance to meet Sumi, one of the 2010 Winter Games mascots, and members of the ActNow BC Athlete Ambassador Team. The tour will also offer locals the chance to meet Olympians and Paralympians from current and past Games.

“The Olympics and Paralympics are about more than just sport – they are an international representation of physical activity and well-being, of healthy living and of community involvement,” said three-time Paralympian Donovan Tildesley. “This is exactly what the Road to 2010 Community Tour embodies and, as an Athlete Ambassador, I look forward to bringing this message of sport, healthy living and friendly competition to communities around the province.”

ActNow BC, 2010 Legacies Now and Sport Fit will participate in each Road to 2010 Community Tour stop. People will have the chance to take part in interactive exhibits, such as the active video games, ski machine, fun zone, Aboriginal Sport Gallery, and a chance to learn about healthy living opportunities for themselves and for their region.
