PEP PROVIDES ASSISTANCE TO PROTECT DUTCH VALLEY HOMES

TERRACE – The Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) is providing assistance to the Regional District of Kitimat Stikine for emergency bank protection work along the Kitsumkalum River in the Dutch Valley area, near Terrace.

At least three properties on Bohler Road are at imminent risk of erosion hazard. Crews are installing riprap along a 300 to 400-metre stretch to armour the bank. This will help protect houses in the area from further bank erosion and prevent the Kitsumkalum River from carving a larger side channel along Bohler Rd. The work is expected to be completed in the next few days.

PEP also provided assistance to the City of Terrace to build a berm south of Graham Avenue in the Eby drainage ditch. The berm strengthens protection for 42 homes along Graham Avenue at risk of flooding from high water levels in the Skeena River. This work is now complete.

More information about flooding the area is available on the Provincial Emergency Program’s website at www.pep.bc.ca.
