NEW JUDGE ADDED TO PROVINCIAL COURT IN SURREY

VICTORIA – Reginald Harris has been appointed to the bench of the British Columbia Provincial Court in Surrey, Attorney General Michael de Jong, QC, announced today.

Harris will take his seat effective Feb. 15.

Harris was a police officer for 16 years before being called to the bar in 1998. He is a partner at Smart, Harris & Martland in Vancouver, where his practice focuses on criminal defence and administrative law. Harris completed law school at the University of British Columbia and was a part-time instructor at Kwantlen University College.

The process to appoint judges involves several steps. Interested lawyers apply and the B.C. Judicial Council, a committee made up of the chief judge, other judges, lawyers and lay people, then reviews the candidates.

The council recommends potential judges to the attorney general, with the final appointment made through a cabinet order-in-council. More information about the appointment process can be found at: www.provincialcourt.bc.ca.
