Minister’s statement on federal wildfire assistance

VICTORIA – Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, has issued the following statement regarding assistance with this year's wildfires:

“The Province has officially notified Public Safety Canada that there is no longer a need for Canadian Armed Forces assistance in combating wildfires throughout the province. This will now enable the orderly withdrawal of ground troops, command personnel, aircraft and equipment.

“We are incredibly fortunate to enjoy such a strong relationship with our federal counterparts and are grateful for their full consideration and immediate response.

“Again this wildfire season, the federal government was by our side to help. We are extremely appreciative of the tremendous support that has been provided by the federal government to our province, including deploying hundreds of Canadian Forces ground troops for fire mop-up, and the use of heavy airlift aircraft and helicopters to move responders and citizens, equipment and patients.

“We also want to recognize the contributions of the Canadian Coast Guard and Transport Canada, the BC Wildfire Service crews, the many volunteers, community agencies and members for their tremendous work to help British Columbians.

“For the second year in a row, British Columbians experienced record wildfire and spring flood seasons. These disasters challenged communities and displaced thousands of people.

“As we shift our focus toward long-term recovery, I want to express my appreciation and my heartfelt thanks to the volunteers and organizations that stepped up in a time of need to stand with their neighbours and communities. This spirit of collaboration demonstrates the resiliency and generosity of British Columbians and is the foundation on which we will heal, rebuild and recover.”
