Provincial health officer recommends expanding alternatives to toxic, unregulated drug supply | |
VICTORIA – British Columbia’s provincial health officer has issued followup recommendations in a report to government in response to the toxic-drug crisis. Alternatives to Unregulated Drugs: Another Step in Saving Lives discusses the unregulated-drug emergency and focuses on one intervention of the many needed: enabling access to alternatives to unregulated drugs (also known as “safer supply”). The report recommends exploring implementation of non-prescribed alternatives to the toxic, unregulated drug supply that is taking hundreds of lives each year in the province. This follows recent recommendations announced in February to improve and expand access to prescribed alternatives. “More than 14,000 people have died of drug poisoning in B.C. since the public-health emergency was declared almost a decade ago in 2016,” said Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer. “For some, a safer alternative to unregulated drugs could have been the right support. We owe it to those affected, to those lost, and those who love and miss them to explore what might be possible to help save lives and reduce harms from unregulated drugs.” The report includes three recommendations:
“Enabling access to non-prescribed alternatives is not the only measure we need to take – it is among a suite of measures I believe we need to help people on their road to recovery,” said Henry. “We can work to put in place a safeguard and an alternative option to help separate people from this toxic, unregulated drug supply, and I envision a future in which people who use drugs are not at the mercy of an unregulated supply and system that puts their lives at significant risk. This requires an urgent shift toward enabling sufficient access to alternatives to meaningfully reduce drug poisonings and deaths.” To read the full report, Alternatives to Unregulated Drugs: Another Step in Saving Lives, visit: https://www.health.gov.bc.ca/pho/reports/special A backgrounder follows. |
